Patients Coming Off Weight-Loss Injections Gain Back Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis suggests that individuals who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds much more quickly than those who halt conventional diet and exercise plans.

Published data in a prominent health publication shows that while overweight individuals often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"People using these medications need to be cognizant of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain implies a reversion to pre-treatment weight within about one and a half years.

Weighing Therapies

The analysis, which examined 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

Scientists note that people who lose weight through dieting generally have a slower weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

The Reason for the Quick Rebound

Experts suggest the way of the jabs accounts for the amplified regain.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal may cause the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could diminish responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement means appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Condition?

Medical guidelines advise the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals say that, given the significant potential of relapse, the therapy is often life-long.

This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "emphasize the long-term character of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.

User Testimonies

People who have discontinued the jabs describe a intense resurgence of cravings.

"It was like a trigger activating and you become starving," described an individual.

This challenge is compounded if individuals have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Widespread Use

Survey data indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.

  • Use is more common among women than males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Finally, experts caution that while these medications are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and maintained weight loss hinges on combined lifestyle changes.
