The Film 'Together' Can Be Streamed, and It Has the Power to Test Your Partnership.

Consider this a dare for those in enduring partnerships who are fans of horror films: Sit down with your partner and watch Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its online premiere on the Hulu service. Outwardly, it could look like standard body horror, but within Together resides a deep meditation about the ways we decide to love each other.

A Debut Feature Investigating Partnership Complexities

Together is the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It features Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have been together for a decade. United in marriage in reality in 2017, the two stars bring a particular energy to their characters, expertly portraying both the good and bad of a committed partnership.

The story starts when Tim and Millie relocate from the metropolis to the country for Millie’s job. A familiar plot device, admittedly, but that’s primarily where the tropes cease. Together transforms into as much a psychological exploration of the partnership as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Paranormal Spark

While walking near their rural residence, a storm hits, and Millie and Tim discover an underground cave. After spending the night there and finally finding a way out, a supernatural entity takes hold of the pair. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes far beyond emotional intimacy.

The complete narrative is a gradually intensifying horror experience, interspersing bits of fever-dream horrors, disturbing (but not excessively graphic) body horror, and genuinely funny exchanges (sometimes amidst something horrific). Michael Shanks orchestrates these parts neatly and wraps them up in a slowly mounting aura of dread.

Nuanced Portrayals

A significant portion of Together is only the two lead actors, and they masterfully render numerous complexities to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Her self-assurance and emotional bond is suffering due to a emotional and physical gap. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his floundering music career gradually emerges.

In contrast, Tim's character senses confinement and separated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve relocated rural and distant from his network of friends. He dreads the notion of totally forfeiting his sense of self in Millie. This fear is intensified by the fact he lacks a driver's license and is dependent on Millie for transportation.

The director's cleverest decision in Together avoids making Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.

Tim and Millie confront the type of challenges that arise in long-term unions after ten years. Deep down, they have affection for one another. They share moments of joy, comfort one another, and open up at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their relationship.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the otherworldly presence in Together act as a metaphor for these fears of unhealthy attachment and giving oneself over to a partner, the allegory avoids being clumsy or pretentious. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a ideal counterpart to the character-driven drama. Both the frights and the fights work together in a mutually beneficial way.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s conclusion, which remains unspoiled, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about unhealthy partnerships. Reports indicate that those not in relationships have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. On the other hand, some couples having disagreements found that the film actually helped them make up.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own response could potentially serve as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the ending inspire feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a positive outlook on love? Will you recognize your own traits in Tim or Millie and feel frustration, or simply glance toward your partner and state, “I’d do that for you”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an exploration you can undertake right now.

Together is streaming on the streaming service Hulu as of this moment.
