The Savior's reaction to violence is to turn the opposite cheek – not as an act of passive acceptance, but as a means to instruct the aggressor; his method regarding offenses states that when someone steals your coat you should give the person your additional clothing too.
The apparent and clear reality that the Jesus from scripture calls for a kind of radical love concentrated on the needy is what has always made Christian religion rather a provocative belief system: appealing to the populace, but due to its inherent radicalness requiring to be contained. During the 1950s it was contained through watering down – Protestantism was so prevalent that it basically sanctified existing conditions.
A Conflict for the Best Within Us
